Top Tips to Look After Your Dog This Summer

Summer has finally landed and we can now enjoy the light evenings, warmer weather and drier dog walks!

I'm sure your dog is just like Frank - he'll spend all day laying in the sun if he could!

We'd put together some tips and advice to keep your dog cool and safe this summer. Remember, if it doubt or there are changes to your dog's behaviour, please ensure to consult a vet.

Grass seeds

Grass seeds can be very dangerous for your dog. They are easily caught up in your dog’s fur or skin, but if left untreated, can require a vet visit. After every walk, check your dog all over, including eyes and ears and between the toes, to check for grass seeds.

Never leave your dog in the car

This applies all year around really, but especially in the summer. Even with windows open, if it’s 22c outside, the temperature in your car can quickly rise to 47c, which can be fatal. Make sure to plan your journeys ahead of time, and if places are not dog friendly, leave your dog safely at home. It isn’t worth the risk.

Dog sun screen

Use pet-safe sun cream on exposed parts of your dog’s skin, such as their nose and tops of their ears, to prevent sunburn. This is especially important for dogs who are light-coloured. If in doubt, speak with your vet.

Moisturise paws

With the warmer weather, drier pavements and fields, keep your dog’s paws healthy and hydrated by popping some pet-friendly moisturiser on them after walks. You can also moisturise your dog’s nose too!

Walk in cooler parts of the day

Early morning and evenings are the best time of day to walk your dog. Not only do you need to think about the hot sun, but also how hot pavements get too. There are lots of dog friendly water bottles in shop too. These are great to carry some water for your dog, with an attachable bowl too (our even has a treat compartment too!).

Cool vests

We invested in a cool vest last year for Frank and on warmer days, he wears these whilst he's inside to help keep him cool. A cool vest helps keeps your dog's core temperature regulated and last 2-3 hours before needing to be 're-cooled'. You can also buy cool mats or cool toys in most high street pet stores.
